The most “real” song, told the classic way

It’s funny: in the podcast, the band members said “Godspeed” was the most “real” song on the whole album. I’d say the opposite is true of the video, this one ends up being the most classic “lyrics video” of the whole series. One continuous shot, Franck Marry’s cover art sitting in the background with the colors shifted slightly, and the silhouette of the man, this time sitting on the elevator instead of standing, a little as if he’d taken some distance and become aware of his own condition. The words parade past him, in front and behind.

Alternate alternative reality

I reused the idea from “This Alternate Reality” almost completely, but here the elevator isn’t soft, and instead of going down, it just goes up, indefinitely. We climb and climb, until the moon itself comes down to us: from three minutes in, the moon begins to transform into a rose.

Wind, built entirely in geometry nodes

One of the key elements of the video is the wind curves you see throughout, entirely made in geometry nodes, with their light intensity reacting directly to the sound, same as always.

Inspirations

I can’t not mention a childhood reference here: Zelda, The Wind Waker. In that game the wind is represented simply as white curves of greater or lesser intensity, which is exactly what I built. The first thing that really popped out at my ears when I heard this song was that wind effect, that impression of ventilation, and it reminded me of a song from my teenage years that I loved, Gorillaz’s “Slow Country,” off their first album, where I really felt like I was in the clouds. Here I feel the same thing, except this sky is cloudy, darker, more tortured.

Cold, then a warmth that takes over

For the colors, I wanted to find that cold feeling at the beginning, and by the end, this red, this slightly seductive warmth that invades everything. The rose is the other interesting part: it wasn’t part of this video to begin with. I was working on all of the visualizers for the series at the same time, and at some point I realized it would connect really well with the one that follows, “Dreamland Newborn,” which you’ll see more of next week.
